Steamship Authority announces technological updates ahead of 2021 Summer Reservation Opening Dates

Posted: January 7, 2021

FALMOUTH (January 7, 2021) – The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority will soon be accepting reservation requests for travel during the 2021 summer season, which runs from May 19 through October 18, 2021. Additionally, the Authority will debut considerable technological improvements designed to improve the reservation opening day experience for its customers.

The technological upgrades include the following: a virtual waiting room that allows customers to see their “place” in line and the approximate wait time until they can make a transaction, eliminating the need for refreshing the website; new hardware that provides processing speeds that are approximately twice as fast as the prior system and offers five times the data storage performance capacity; and the implementation of additional cloud-based servers that will allow the Authority to better manage internet traffic between its websites and its users.

As was the case in 2019 and 2020, there will be two general online openings – one for Nantucket and one for Martha’s Vineyard. The Authority will have extra support onsite and, during the first two days of the internet openings for each route, the reservation office hours will be extended to 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. should a customer need assistance with their login password or PIN.
