The Steamship Authority is currently accepting applications to fill a union position of Machinist / Diesel Marine Mechanic within the Maintenance Department.  The hourly rate is $38.31.

Job Summary

In a safe, efficient, and professional manner, the Machinist / Diesel Marine Mechanic supports the maintenance team in the preventative, corrective, and general maintenance of marine mechanical systems. This position is responsible for the operation of machine shop equipment and the overhaul, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of diesel engines and associated mechanical systems aboard vessels and at shore-based facilities.

Maintenance employees must adhere to all health, safety, quality, and environmental standards as established by the HSQE Manager and applicable regulatory agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate machine shop equipment to fabricate, repair, and modify mechanical components.
  • Overhaul, repair, and maintain pumps, compressors, hydraulic systems, engine controls, and diesel engines.
  • Diagnose mechanical failures and perform corrective repairs on marine propulsion and auxiliary systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements.
  • Work independently from sketches, manuals, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Assist other maintenance trades as needed to support vessel and facility operations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including work orders, timesheets, service reports, and parts usage.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Participate in safety training.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by maintenance management.
  • May be required to work weekends, nights, or extended hours based on operational and maintenance schedules.
  • Work assignments may be based at one of the Authority’s maintenance facilities in Fairhaven, Falmouth, or Hyannis, depending on operational needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in the repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of diesel engines and mechanical systems, or equivalent experience (cooperative education accepted).
  • Marine or shipyard experience preferred.
  • Experience with EMD, MTU, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, and Caterpillar engines is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Skilled in interpreting and working from technical manuals, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems commonly found in marine environments.
  • Computer literacy required for maintenance documentation and reporting.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Working Conditions

This position involves work in machine shop, vessel, and shipyard environments and may require lifting, climbing, confined space entry, and exposure to noise, heat, and mechanical hazards.
