The Steamship Authority is currently accepting applications to fill a Welder position within the Maintenance Department. This is a union position and the hourly rate is $38.31.

Job Summary

In a safe, efficient, and professional manner, the Welder will support the maintenance team in the fabrication, repair, and renewal of marine and shore-based structural and mechanical components. Duties include, but are not limited to, layout, fitting, welding, cutting, and fabrication of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper-nickel components on board vessels, in drydock, dockside, and within Authority maintenance facilities and terminals.

Maintenance employees must adhere to all health, safety, quality, and environmental standards as set by the HSQE Manager and applicable regulatory agencies. Work is performed in accordance with applicable ABS, USCG, and industry standards as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform welding operations using SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG) processes.
  • Weld steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper-nickel materials in all positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
  • Prepare materials for fabrication including layout, sawing, punching, coping, drilling, fitting, and assembly.
  • Perform cutting and burning using oxy-acetylene and plasma equipment.
  • Fabricate, fit, tack, and weld components such as foundations, brackets, plating, rails, and structural members.
  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, specifications, and work orders.
  • Inspect completed welds and perform repairs as necessary to meet quality and inspection standards.
  • Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Assist other maintenance trades in performing general maintenance and repair work as required.
  • Complete required documentation including, but not limited to, timesheets, work orders, and service reports.
  • Participate in safety training and comply with hot work, confined space, and PPE requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by maintenance management.
  • May be required to work weekends as part of a posted maintenance schedule.
  • Schedule dependent, may be assigned to one of the maintenance shops in Fairhaven, Falmouth, or Hyannis.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
  • Minimum experience in marine or industrial welding required.
  • Proficiency in Stick, MIG, and TIG welding processes.
  • Ability to work from drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication techniques and welding safety practices.
  • Marine welding experience preferred.
  • Experience welding to ABS standards preferred.
  • Welding certifications or completion of a formal welding training program preferred.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
