The Steamship Authority is currently accepting applications to fill a union position of a HVAC Technician position within the Maintenance Department.  The hourly rate is $38.31.

Job Summary

In a safe, efficient, and professional manner, the HVAC Technician will support the maintenance team in the preventative, corrective, and general maintenance of marine and shore-based heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Duties include, but are not limited to, annual servicing, cleaning, inspections, diagnostics, repair, installation, and commissioning of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

The HVAC Technician will perform work on a wide range of systems including marine HVAC, commercial HVAC, chilled water systems, geothermal systems, mini-split systems, and chilled beam systems. Maintenance employees must adhere to all health, safety, quality, and environmental standards established by the HSQE Manager and applicable regulatory agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform annual service, cleaning, inspections, and preventative maintenance on marine and commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, controls, and associated components.
  • Install, service, and repair HVAC systems including, but not limited to, marine HVAC systems, chilled water systems, geothermal HVAC systems, chilled beam systems, and mini-split systems.
  • Troubleshoot and work with HVAC control systems, including PLC-based controls and programs.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, control diagrams, installation instructions, and work orders.
  • Establish appropriate procedures to locate system failures, identify root causes, and determine component replacement or repair.
  • Perform refrigerant handling and recovery in compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Complete required documentation including, but not limited to, timesheets, work orders, service reports, inspection reports, and purchase requisitions.
  • Assist other maintenance trades as required and perform general maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in safety training, on-call rotations, and emergency response as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by maintenance management.
  • May be required to work weekends as part of a posted maintenance schedule.
  • Schedule dependent, may be assigned to one of the maintenance shops in Fairhaven, Falmouth, or Hyannis.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working as an HVAC Technician.
  • Marine HVAC experience preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification required (Universal preferred).
  • Experience servicing and installing commercial HVAC systems.
  • Experience with HVAC PLC controls and control programming preferred.
  • Proven experience diagnosing and repairing HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Geothermal HVAC systems experience preferred.
  • Chilled beam HVAC systems experience preferred.
  • Mini-split HVAC system installation, service, and repair experience preferred.
  • Ability to work from mechanical drawings, schematics, and control diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration cycles, airflow, hydronics, and control systems.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
